The Carolina Merchant ship was owned by brothers - Walter & James Gibson.  James Gibson was the Captain of the ship.

John Erskine of Carnock, brother of Henry Erskine 3rd Lord Cardross, described the Carolina Merchant as being of “170 ton timber vessel carrying an armament of 16 cannons”.  He also writes that when rowing out to see the ship set sail on July 21st 1864, a trumper “sounded several times which was truly pleasant”.
