History: Previously, the land had been the Nunnery for the Catholic Church before they moved to Ladys Island. The original Catholic Church is still located a few blocks away on Carteret & Duke Street. Two Church buildings were moved to the upper end of Charles Street before construction of the 9 buildings making up the 30 Barnwell Bluff Townhouses. The Barnwell Bluff Townhouses were named after a bluff were the Beaufortian Colonel John "Tuscarora Jack" Barnwell built the 1721 Fort King George located on a bluff of the Altamaha River. The bluff is located near the current town of Darien, GA. Tuscarora Jack is said to be buried under St. Helena Episcopal Church.
